What is a beautiful color, a beautiful flavor, and should be made part of your juicing playbook? Blueberry juice! This is the most basic and straightforward superfood you can get, not to mention it is probably the best tasting. Not only is blueberry juice a deeply delicious superfood, but it is also super simple to make.

Are Blueberries Good for Juicing

If blueberries make some of the tastiest and healthiest juices why aren’t blueberries more often on the juicing menu? Berries and other small fruits can be difficult to juice because they are too soft for typical juicing methods. But that doesn’t mean that they aren’t good for juicing. They are actually the perfect fruit for making a whole or blended juice. It is a simple approach that allows blueberries to be the star as an antioxidant flavor punch.

Blueberries are also good for juicing because they are generally easy to find and affordable. They are especially good for juicing if you live somewhere near blueberry country and have access to large amounts at harvest time. Fresh in-season blueberries will make some of the most flavorful juice you might ever have.

How to Make Blueberry Juice

First make sure you have the right equipment. You’ll want to make sure you have the right berry juicer.

There are several methods for making blueberry juice. Many recipes involve cooking the blueberries in water and adding sugar. This method will add sugar and have less nutritional value than fresh juice. This might be a good route to go If you have lots of berries and are thinking about preserving by canning.

A tasty drink so this method makes, but a much easier and by far more nutritious is fresh made blueberry juice. The blended juicing method in this recipe is to simply blend the blueberries with some water until smooth.

If you do use a juicer you won’t be able to get the same glass of rich blueberry juice you will from blending. That doesn’t mean that blueberries can’t be a nice addition to other juices. A good juicer combo to try is apple blueberry. For the best results alternate the blueberries with apples. Feed the blueberries into the juicer a few at a time between pieces of apple. This will help move the berries through the juicer.

Blending is the preferred method of making fresh blueberry juice. In a blender, no bit of the berry is lost in the juicing process. This also helps release the goodness from the skins and pulp. Blending is quicker and requires less clean-up than juicing.

Gather equipment and ingredients. For equipment, all you need is a blender, a strainer, and vessels for mixing and drinking. The ingredients are just about as simple as you can get, blueberries, water, and a sprig of rosemary.

Add the berries and water to your blender and take it for a spin. Blend for a few moments until they are completely broken down. This time will vary by the power of your blender from a few seconds to almost a minute.

Strain if desired and add the sprig of rosemary. Give it a swirl and let it sit for a couple of minutes to allow the rosemary to impart some of its flavors into the juice. When you’re ready to serve, remove the sprig. For the most refreshing and flavorful juice add ice and serve cold.

Variations

This blueberry juice recipe featured here uses rosemary to infuse the blueberry juice. This gives the juice a unique but mellow floral note to the juice. No rosemary? No problem, enjoy the blueberry juice as-is or try another herb or flavor.

Mint is an herb that goes well with blueberry juice. A squeeze of lemon or lime will also add a nice flavor. Berries a little too tart? A drizzle of honey while blending brings natural sweetness and a nice flavor. For something different freeze blueberry juice into ice cube trays and use them to chill down a glass of lemonade or Orange Juice.

If you are looking for a smooth juice, definitely strain before serving. But if you want to get all the nutrient goodness and fiber from the berries and are ok with some texture drink without straining. Unstrained juice can help make a good chia pudding and has other culinary applications like marinades and sauces.

Health Benefits of Blueberry Juice

We have all heard blueberries called a superfood. But just what qualifies these little blue balls as a superfood? Blueberries contain very large amounts of important nutrients. Most notably are the high levels of antioxidants. This antioxidant-rich juice will help protect against cell damage and support a healthy heart and brain while being low in calories and full of fiber. Blues berries can also help to control high blood sugar levels[1]

Blueberries have:

  • Antioxidants
  • Fiber
  • Vitamin K and C
  • Manganese
  • Wide range of trace minerals

Despite all of the benefits that blueberries have, there can be too much of a good thing! Blueberries have lots of fiber and just like other fruit, eating much more than the usual amount might result in some digestive upsets.

Another thing to consider with blueberries is that while their ability to lower blood sugar can be a great advantage to some, it could have negative results for others. Those with lower blood sugar or hypoglycemia should be aware that eating lots of blueberries may cause blood sugar to dip to an unsafe level [2].

One of the biggest benefits of Blueberry juice is that it makes it so simple to incorporate a superfood into your diet regularly. Besides blueberry juice, add some to smoothies, cereal, or just out of hand.
